About

dcportraitDarren Carroll is an Austin, Texas-based lifestyle, sports and portrait photographer. His award-winning editorial work appears regularly in the pages of Sports Illustrated, Golf Digest and Golf World magazines, which have sent him all over the country and the world to cover professional golf and everything associated with it. He has covered all of golf’s major championships (The Masters, U.S. Open, PGA Championship and The Open Championship, a/k/a/ the British Open) multiple times, as well as the Ryder Cup, President’s Cup, and Solheim Cup matches.

Such apparent involvement with one sport has earned him a photographic reputation as a “golf guy,” and while that’s not necessarily a bad problem to have, it’s one that he tries to shed on a daily basis through his portrait, music and reportage work, which has also appeared not only in those magazines, but on a couple of album covers and in other publications ranging from Smithsonian to Texas Highways, from Smart Money to Garden & Gun, and many others. He has more than fifteen years’ worth of experience in advertising and commercial photography and, as you’ll hopefully notice as you browse through this site, it involves a lot more than just golf and other sports.

Born and raised in New York, he obtained a bachelor’s degree in government from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. while at the same time learning of his addiction to photography and aversion to anything having to do with putting his bachelor’s degree in government to good use. In 1994 he moved to Texas to pursue a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Texas at Austin, with every intention of moving back to the east coast within two years. More than twenty years later, he’s still in Austin (well, just outside of it, actually, in a little town called Cedar Creek). When not out of town on assignments he enjoys hanging out with his ten-year old son, Jake; distance running (he’s completed three marathons since moving to “Fit City” and eventually kicking a two pack-a-day habit); and attempting to learn how to play the guitar (without much success). He’s also a fan of scouring the central Texas countryside for barbecue joints, for their atmosphere as much as the food. (The photo at left was taken at Louie Mueller’s in Taylor, Texas by, San Francisco sports photographer Brad Mangin, a fellow barbecue fiend.)
